Artist Statement:
I recently realized that my work can be best described not by what I seek in the final product, but by what I don't seek. Each work is in itself an experiment.
In the past, I have avoided subtlety. My older works have tried to offer my opinions on aspects of society that were not commonly addressed by visual art. I wanted my audience to be struck first by the image, and then to slowly realize the basic ideas of what I had depicted.
In recent years, I've begun to shun realism. I strive to avoid finished themes, focusing not on my subject, but on its interaction within itself.. the better to force my audience to apply their own sense of aesthetics to my work.
Feminine forms (and trees, which I also consider feminine) lend themselves quite well to reinterpretation. I like to break the original form, most often by use of artificial negative space, in order to reconstruct the image. The final product must successfully reflect the original emotion and intent of the form.
