Artist Statement for Sheree Harrison

|
You know how sometimes you see through something.
It may be something familiar, you’ve never really seen. Or a composite of images that, pulled together, creates a whole. It’s the moment of deciphering the geometry in the mosaic on the cathedral ceiling. So obvious – as if it was always there.
The painter does not work in the moment; it’s not an instant medium. But it is the job of the painter to create the moment, to see through it, to pull the fragments together to reflect the whole.
The archive of experiences that, together, inform my brush, are as varied as South Africa, itself.
Impressionist prints in the living room, bare-foot lessons in clay ox making under a Transkei tree; to town for formal studies in fine art; to inner-city Johannesburg. A musician on the road with a band, playing, watching, sketching, storing. Moments.
Industrial art, film industry, alternative healing, love, motherhood, elation, satisfaction, depression. A home by the sea. Painting.
