Artist Statement for Steve Hendrickson

In 1971 I enrolled in a Life Drawing class at Portland State University. I have been drawing the figure in charcoal, pencil, and pastel on a relatively consistent basis since that inception. Although my creative pursuit has intensified relatively late, I have always been aware of the internal dormant pressure to explore and expand my creative potential. Creating art is a factor in my life that helps me achieve alignment, spiritual vitality, and anima.
I am primarily self-taught. The few formal drawing classes, oil painting workshops, my participation in figure drawing groups, and Northwest Stone Sculptor’s Symposiums are the significant sources of formal art training I have experienced. Most of my learning experience and influence as it relates to the wide spectrum of art, I have absorbed through visiting galleries and museums, both in the US and in Western Europe, studying various artist’s work through books, knowing various artists and exploring their methodologies and philosophies, participating in Life Drawing groups on an ongoing basis, and having an unbridled interest in life’s experience and the cosmos at large. The main focus of my work is involved with variations focusing on the transformational and conceptual aspects of portraiture. There is an undefined area, or domain, where I choose to work, where “the object is not always the subject”. Of the artists I have studied, I am attracted to the permutations, perspectives, and symbolic directions the cubists and surrealists have taken….. Especially the development and evolution of their vocabulary and language.
