Artist Statement:
Mark Nakamura is interested in producing documentation of fictions as a strategy to create works that focus on ideas rather than physical objects. In doing so, he intends to insert actions/events into the past, rewriting history. This is often done by working backwards, first producing the ephemera that results from art exhibitions, eventually leading up to the creation of physical artworks (if appropriate for the project). By producing art referents or semantic/semiotic modifiers, though it may result in a material form in itself, his works often reside in the space outside of the art object. Nakamura is also interested in collaborations that result in atypical gift economies. For example, he may present his services in a giving gesture with the results that have self-serving implications that put his intentions and the collaboration dynamic into question....
