Artist Statement:
My work of the past ten years involves Plein Air Paintings. This term applies to paintings done in nature. This involves finding a location, setting up, interpreting, and recording an impression of what I see. The process on location seems to be a meditation. I begin with a drawing and in the next three to four hours the canvas evolves into an image of what is before me. The outcome is usually a painting that is three quarters finished. I then take it to my studio where I’ll tighten and work out the finishing brush strokes.
When I’m in the process I’m not aware of time. I find myself not thinking - just painting. I see each canvas as an experience for using color to explore shapes before me. My pallet is bright because I love color and my paintings are usually done in the bright light of mornings. My inspiration comes from the changing seasons. Year after year I find myself experiencing a familiarity with my subject matter weather it be a landscape of the Buttes or an Iris garden.
