Artist Statement for James Snidle

My work of the past ten years involves Plein Air Paintings. This term applies to paintings done in nature. This involves finding a location, setting up, interpreting, and recording an impression of what I see. The process on location seems to be a meditation. I begin with a drawing and in the next three to four hours the canvas evolves into an image of what is before me. The outcome is usually a painting that is three quarters finished. I then take it to my studio where I’ll tighten and work out the finishing brush strokes.
When I’m in the process I’m not aware of time. I find myself not thinking - just painting. I see each canvas as an experience for using color to explore shapes before me. My pallet is bright because I love color and my paintings are usually done in the bright light of mornings. My inspiration comes from the changing seasons. Year after year I find myself experiencing a familiarity with my subject matter weather it be a landscape of the Buttes or an Iris garden. The season and what it has in store predicts what the subject matter will be. Places are revisited as years go by. These places become old friends. Being blessed with making art is a gift to me. My gift to you is sharing my insights.
