i think it is time to make a statement to viewers. by now you must know that i carve on ivory, bone, antlers, etc. for many many years i worked with elephants and i love them dearly. and, i am a Buddhist nun so my beliefs do not allow killing ANYTHING. when i began carving i found a reputable ivory and bone dealer who uses only legal ivory. legal ivory is either fossilized or pre-ban and neither of these take animal lives. as we go thru our lives situations come up that force a bit of compromise. i feel that no animal is loosing its life because of my art. but if i was not discriminate in purchasing the ivory i could not, with any kind of conscience, purchase it. artists take chances in order to make others think.. one time, i was given a commission to do a wood relief carving of hunters. well, i just couldn't carve dead people or whatever.but i took the commission and carved a piece titled "revenge of the forest creatures". there were hunters armed with knives and swords and even falcons. BUT, there were no signs of actual fighting or injury. now, this piece hopefully got people to thinking about things. about hunting and capturing wildlife for personal entertainment, etc. or when i do a picture with crickets in cages. there is always one trying to ecape or a fellow creature trying to free his companion from sure fate. i am always hopeful that my art will make people search inside themselves . i know i have to do soulsearching before i can make the statement to give to others thru my art. sorry if anyone was upset over my art work.
