Artist Statement:
I’m from the Isle of Lewis,
the Outer Hebrides of
Scotland. I was brought up
here and have returned to make
my art here.
For me landscapes create
memories, and nature
influences emotion.
Moods are the source of my
themes - Pleasures from
puddles, streams, moss
cushions, luscious grass or
dry grass at the end of
summer. The related emotions
feed my imagination. The
memories in my paintings are
often linked with a blissful
childhood in the island.
Alongside enchantment, some
works carry appreciation of
nature as quirky and at times
desolate.
Line, pattern and texture make
up compositions; some are
flat, like a map, other pieces
create a space, into which the
viewer is invited to enter.
Memories of being in a place
-how I felt, where I was
going, time of year and of
day, weather and sounds - are
the basis for my themes. I aim
to describe feelings and
notions about the places,
which I feel linked to,
isolating and exaggerating
colours, limiting their number
to produce definite mood.
Interplay between harmony and
unruliness, as well as how I
interpret landscape fascinates
me. I sometimes attempt to
challenge my idea of balance.
