Artist Statement for Rudy Sparkuhl

In my paintings I endeavour to give a clear and unambiguous translation of the physical likeness of some existing object or situation. Even while I attempt to be objective and non-judgemental, I realize that the subjects themselves are charged with meaning. These subjects are all an expression of an idea about our relationship to the world. They are the physical manifestation of a belief in change and progress; that the world is there for us to use and shape to suit our desires and needs. From this follows the realization that change may also include obsolescence, dislocation, and decay.
If one proper function of art is to validate experience, then in choosing certain subjects as worthy of artistic consideration,I am also, to a degree, validating the ideas that engendered them.
