Artist Statement for Michael B. Schwartz

I am an artist that abides by the cycles of life, time, place, nature and history. I work in and outside the studio and traditional fine arts venues. My community based artwork, teaching, administration and studio work simultaneously criss cross, inform and revitalize one other. Drawing and writing are part of my daily rituals; cartoons, charcoal drawings, in my journal, on a scrap of paper. These ideas are cataloged to be used later in paintings or projects. I create three bodies of work annually - fall, spring and summer. As my painting matures and grows in sophistication and meaning, subject matter emerges, fades and reemerges. The themes of ecology, identity and memory appear to be consistent elements. Sometimes these images become a part of a mural, or commissioned work and sometimes its the other way around. Painting, to me, is perhaps the ultimate in spiritual practice. After more than 25 years of intentional creation, moving from strict representationalism to expressionism and ultimately towards a personal spiritual vocabulary of form, material, treatment and light.
