Artist Statement for Crystal Lockwood
|

|
Crystal Lockwood was born in Sacremento, California in 1963. Crystal began sculpting in natural wood in 1980 at the young age of 17, when her unique talents for sculpture began to emerge. Her main passion for sculpture is to portray the human figure, revealing a metamorphosis of the figure emerging from the wood. Crystal carves original, one-of-a-kind sculptures out of woods that she personally selects for their natural beauty and inherent energy. Choosing the wood is an integral part of her creative process. Crystal gathers wood from the coasts of California and the forests of Hawaii. Crystal received a degree in Art History at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1987.
The root of inspiration for Crystal’s sculptures are twofold – the natural shape of the wood itself and her love for the human form. Crystal is also greatly influenced by ancient Greek sculpture, the works of Michelangelo and Rodin, and the more modern work of Manuel Neri.
In 1998, Crystal began casting select pieces of wood sculpture for reproduction in bronze. The beauty of making casts of wood sculptures is that the original is not lost in the mold making process. Crystal currently has 6 bronzes in production, in editions of 25.
In the year 2,000, Crystal moved from her native California and began living and creating on the Big Island of Hawaii, where she now maintains her studio. Her work has since been inspired by the culture of Hawaii, its legends, traditions, and people. The art of the hula dance has inspired Crystal to create figures reflecting the movement of the dancers.
In 2004, Crystal was honored to have been named a finalist in the National Parks Sculpture Project, “Wahi Kapu”, and she was the recipient of a Design Honorarium from the Mountain Institute and Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. The “Wahi Kapu” project was a monumental sculpture to portray the goddess “Pele” at the Visitor’s center at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
