Artist Statement:
Native American Star Quilts
are not just gorgeous....
They are sacred. These
beautiful quilts are tied
directly to some Tribes'
mythology and Star Knowledge,
and are used in many sacred
ceremonies. They take center
stage in births, weddings, and
funerals, making the Star
Quilt important throughout
life.
Visit a Native American home
on the Plains, and you're sure
to see a Star Quilt or two
here and there. Perhaps draped
over a sofa, or across the
back of a chair. Or there will
be a baby quilt on the wall.
Over in the corner, there
might even be a big powwow
drum wrapped in an ancient,
tattered Star Quilt. Old Star
Quilts are never thrown away,
but are always used, treasured
and loved forever.
In the bedroom of course,
there certainly will be a
stunning Star Quilt on the
bed. Usually Star Quilts are
"coverlets." They don't hang
down the sides of a bed, but
just cover the top of the
mattress. Although there are
many reasons why they aren't
bigger, one is because often
times they were originally
constructed for ceremonial
purposes, such as "going on
the hill" (vision quest) or
another ceremony that requires
