Artist Statement for Stella Violano

STELLA M. VIOLANO

When I was a child the world was a place to be freely explored. I would ride my bike, the sun in my face and the wind blowing my hair, anywhere my heart desired. My art career started during such an excursion, when digging past the layer of sand in the local park playground I happened upon a thick slab of adobe earth clay. This discovery led to hours of sculpting subjects, usually the family dog. My father told me of the local history and the role that the native adobe clay played in building homes. It was this love of both art and history that lead me to change mediums to oil painting which allowed me to record even greater detail and imagery in a smaller space.
I am currently painting two series:
"The Historic Series" and "The Animal Series"

“The Animal Series”

The Animal Series features both wildlife and homeless domestic animals in rescues and city shelters. When painting homeless pets I will often paint small studies first and sell them to benefit the rescue that is housing the animal used as a model. The popularity of these studies has allowed me to generously donate back to the animal rescue shelters, directly benefiting the animals that I use as models.

“The Historic Series”

My historic series commemorates the simple lifestyles of the past century. From Florida’s palmetto grove Cow Hunters to Nevada’s Lake Tahoe’s Steamer, such images are symbols of life when living meant working off the land and knowing the outside world intimately. It is my greatest passion to paint history in a way that allows the viewer to feel and appreciate the past as I do.
