Artist Statement for Stephen Cressey

The Bio: I started this glass adventure a few years ago, it is a place I go and reflect on the day and relax. Work through ideas, whether it be connected or disconnected. I am at the most part, self taught, except for what other people have shown me. This material is nothing short of amazing. It pushes quietly while teaching balance and patience. Plus it’s fun!
The Recipe: Start with clear crystal tubing. Overlay the surface with hand drawn color glass of choice aided with heat from the fires. Heat in the fires until soft. Manipulate to the desired shape, surface texture and thickness. Blow into open end of the tube, using the right amount of force to create a bubble. Pull, push, twist and turn the glass while blowing simultaneously if needed to achieve the finished shape you had in mind.
The Quote: “Following this view… only the simplest forms, and these are the result, not plastic manipulation, but rather of allowing natural forces to assert themselves; they are shapes into which the glass tends to fall and draw when natural forces are allowed free play in certain directions.” Thomas Bolas—1898—Glass Blowing and Glass Working
