Artist Statement for Suzette Terry

Suzette as of late has been working on collages without a preconceived notion of the end result. Allowing the imagery to appear, drawing on the subconscious element. This method starts with collaging hand painted papers and building on the forms that appear, and blocking out others to create clarity. As one collage is completed another is brought about by the discoveries made in the last. This method has allowed for spontaneity of imagery and many surprises in Suzette’s work.

Body Works - Our bodies are a function of our mind. My painted figures manifest the impact that events in our everyday life have upon men and women: how we bend, stretch, and struggle to balance the issues we deal with. By using the painted human form in combination with other symbolic elements such as ladders, doors and swings I am trying to project more elemental issues. These added elements allude to social, political and economic values and of alternative paths. My goal is to pursue universal notions that I believe are important to communicate and share with others.
