Artist Statement:
I believe art should be an
honest expression of one’s
past and present life,
including the good and bad. I
have a natural tendency to
crop in close to my subject as
to isolate certain qualities.
I find that by simplifying I
can focus in on certain
qualities and ...

Biggest Artistic Inspiration I have several inspirations but if I had to pick only one, then I would have to say myself. First, the fact that I am finally creating art heals my past frustrations and pain is a huge motivator. I have a voice that people respect and appreciate. With every success I get stronger. I am learning that every negative can turn into inspiration. To be self sustain and in control is extremely inspirational.

Of course there are important Artistic inspirations besides my inner process. I can't pick only one because they are all important to me. Let's just say it's history of art as a whole. The fact that art through the history of mankind always reflected society at the time. That very fact makes me want to leave my mark of my interpretation of how society affected me and ultimately inspired me.

Why Did You Become An Artist To express myself. The pain, sadness, shyness, the things I couldn't understand let alone explain about myself. Creating art is healing in that it makes concrete what I am feeling in a way that communicates to others. I've always wanted to do that.
When I was in my painful teen years, I started to appreciate musicians, such as Jimi Hendrix, and artists, such as Vincent Van Gogh, who created their art from their hearts. I was touched by their work because I could relate to their pain. At that point in my life, I realized that art had a purpose and I decided to become an artist.

Your Personal Biography Steve Herman was born in Washington DC and raised in Potomac, MD and was influenced at an early age by his aunt and grandmother, both of who were painters. Steve was also motivated by his father, who was very handy around the house and Steve helped him fix just about everything. So, naturally Steve loved to build and take things apart and combined that with art. As the years passed, Steve worked with many different forms of art, and eventually learned the computer. In 1995, Steve quit his 9-5 job to study graphic design at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, MD. In his senior year, He received a semester long internship in New York City but ended up staying for good.

For Steve, the process of creating art has always been an intimate experience and this is reflected in his work. He wants to capture the special quality that draws him to his subject. Whether it is the movement of elements or the vibrancy of colors, He attempts to find an angle or crop that forces the viewer to take a deeper look. Everyday objects that are unnoticed become works of art. This approach is not about telling a story. It is about design, directly relating to Steve's love of graphic design. He wants to create abstract images that make people think and wonder exactly what it is they are looking at. He wants people to look beyond the superficialness of the subject's surface and see the beauty within.
