My mother tells me that I was always an observer. As a child, I would sit perfectly still for hours, without talking, without moving anything but my eyes, and just watch. This need to observe has guided my whole life.
I have always travelled alone. My camera has became my companion. It was my journal, my confidant, my storyteller, my eye on the world.
In my travels, I reflected, how the features blend together in our memories. Our minds become a giant canvas painted with these images. Some are clear. Others fade. The effect is similar to a flash which leaves a momentary impression on the eye and then fades as other more recent flashes take their place.
I began working on a technique I now call "Crossings", a combination of overlapping multiple images of a specific city, region, neighborhood, or landscape onto traditional film, scanning it at high res, then using a computer to ease any harsh edges or processing scratches. The final images reflect a "crossing" through the place. The features overlap, as do our memories.
These big negatives have a huge capacity for enlargement. For best viewing, I feel the prints should be large. I want the viewer to feel like they are walking into the place; cruising Hollywood Boulevard, walking through New Orleans, or wandering the Vegas strip. Because most of the images are black and white, the old and the new exist in a timeless space of memory and nostalgia.
So far, the response has been fantastic. I’ve been recently awarded 5 International Photography Awards, and gained commissions from West Jefferson Hospital in Louisiana, as well as completed a public art commission for the Gretna, LA courthouse. I have been in several group shows around the U.S. and have a solo show scheduled for July.
My greatest dream would be to travel and capture cities, towns, and peoples all over the earth.
