Artist Statement:
Creating art was my primary interest throughout childhood and it has since become my profession. Nearly all of my work is nature-inspired. Sometimes I am compelled to show recognizable forms, other times I focus only on a pattern, color combination or phenomenon that lends itself well to either organic or geometric abstraction. I am also inspired by the fairy tales and myths woven by various cultures to explain nature’s mysteries.
My goal is to produce works that will hold one’s attention—works that can be contemplated repeatedly and that invite viewers to meditate on something as simple as a bit of luminous color or a graceful line. I prefer to work small because doing so is conducive to my aim of creating an intimate viewing experience.
While I have worked in a wide range of media, I always come back to watercolor, pastel and colored pencil, often combining two or all three of the latter in order to create a layered look that is at once saturated and translucent.
