Artist Statement
By cultivating my passion for painting I understood
clearly that I use the act, of expressing myself, as a tool to
communicate with my subconscious. This connection allows me to
better perceive and deal with my feelings and existence as a woman.
My paintings allow me to better comprehend my own corporal,
intellectual and sentimental complexities. Their subjects allow
me express my point of view of the global woman issues by
spontaneously illustrating acts, roles and scenes, in my
paintings. These images are then transformed with the
computer, allowing them to evolve in their transformation.
Weaving has made an appearance in my latest work.
This act of connecting strings and fibres is definitely an act of
repairing and of connecting bonds, of family ties.
The imaginary creatures that emerge from the deepest of my
creativity demand to be valued and accepted in this world…

She's Got Problems
BY MARY TEMPLETON
The "problem with no name" was Betty Friedan's phrase for the lack of social and spiritual meaning in the lives of women. She addressed this nameless predicament in her 1963 book The Feminine Mystique, which is often credited with launching the modern women's movement. But 40 years after the start of the coup, women are still trying to grasp the problem with no name. Five of them tackle this conundrum with a 21st-century slant in the exhibit "The Feminine Mystique," opening today at Earth Gallery. "Mystique" gathers the work of Shelley Shanks, Aimi Dunn, Sorange Castillo, Ann Hernandez and Michelle Cook, whose paintings reflect the modern woman in the context of family, career, private self and role in the larger world. It's ladies' night today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Date/Time: Wednesdays-Saturdays. Continues through Sept. 30
Price: Free

BROWNSTEIN / Try heading for Collision
However, if you're still hellbent on banging into fellow citizens, may we suggest a cultural alternative that shouldn't entail any bloodshed whatsoever: Collision, the third annual art show/costume party/dance, tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the Long Hall, 450 Beaumont St. 2nd floor.
A collective of 32 local artists has produced a whack of paintings, photos, sculptures(audio and visual) and installations depicting colliding colours, people and cakes masquerading as cars. To be on the safe side, best to keep an eye out for the colliding paper airplanes.
Admission free, dance and music until the wee hours is provided by DJs Ever and Slide.
Collision attire is suggested
Helmets are optional.
