The celebration of life, the good days and the not so good. The insecurities and memories of growing up in foreign land form the main theme of my works. This collection titled “Colours of Africa”, brings out Africa in its varied hues and aspects.
Having spent 12 years plus of my life in Africa I have lived through many military regimes, fragile democratic rules and two coups. The fear of living through such a shaky atmosphere coupled with my own instabilities of adolescence is the common strand of my art.
After moving to India, I noticed similarities in heritage and culture between Africa and India. In this collection, the portraits are expressive of fear and insecurities of growing up and adulthood, (Children with fear in Understanding Me; insecurities of peer pressure Peer Pressure the warrior fearing what he will face that day What am I gonna face today?; the vegetable lady wondering about her future( What is this gonna get me). Lack of self-confidence is evident at every stage of life, but I found that if we life in fear we are never going to see the fruit of LIFE! Fear kills creativity and prejudices one’s experiences. Most Indians of my generation have not seen what it is like to life in a non-democratic society unless they have lived in a country or region under Military or Autocratic rule - “Life without freedom.”
Even with a shunting economy and political rule, I still managed to see greatness in Africa, especially in Nigeria – a country rich in art, dance, music, wildlife and much more. Part of this collection expresses that - the beauty and free life, the life of free expression.
Africans’ enthusiasm for dance and music inspires many. Their dance is energetic and full of life; the music is contagious - you can’t help but shake your hips while listening to it! A man playing an African guitar made of pumpkin shell, the drummers, the singers and most importantly their celebration of festivals with their majestic masks of Gods(Ashante, their Goddess of Fertility and masks of other gods find place in many of my works) form another part of this collection.
