Artist Statement for Sue Cowan

I am a self-taught artist who paints mainly in acrylics, and occasionally in oils. From my studio, I produce paintings that express my intense interest in color and light. My artwork has given me contentment and joy since retiring from accounting. I believe I have inherited a natural talent from my mother and my great-uncle Adolphus Burton who was a college art teacher and oil painter in British Columbia.

I mainly work with acrylic paints although some of my works are produced in oils. Painting on stretched canvas is my favorite but I also enjoy painting on masonite panels because of their incredible smooth surface. My main goal as an artist is just to have the viewer enjoy my paintings as I am not trying to impart any social or religious beliefs or make a statement of any kind. I paint life as I would like it to be and in vivid color.

Painting is an intense passion and when the mood strikes I can often be found in my studio in the wee hours of the morning, with my faithful chihuahua curled up in his basket nearby. At times I will produce several works all at once.

Unusual things often inspire me, the sunlight on an old fence post or a an old can, the way a bunch of grass looks poking through the snow, or the delicate texture and color in folds of fabric.

I hope one day to become recognized as a passionate, credible artist. People should just enjoy my paintings and not look beyond for deeper meanings that just aren't there.
