Artist’s Statement, or Why Do I Do This Anyway?
Life is like a book pressed up against the nose. What is not easily recognized or understood at close range becomes focused and clear when viewed through the lens of experience; understanding and perspective are the result. I have never been a person with merely one goal, one purpose. I have traveled a multifaceted educational and vocational road which has enriched me with benefits tenfold from what I expected. It might be the journey itself that defines and transforms us, rather than just the destination.
From my diverse backgrounds of psychology, business, art and technology, I have arrived at a pivotal junction; in my quest to develop as an artist and give back to my community, I not only do freelance graphic design and illustration, but also teach digital imaging and graphics to adults at both Palm Beach State College, the School District of Palm Beach County, Old School Square in Delray Beach, in addition to many private students.
I have combined this pursuit with a marriage of 38 years to my husband Ken, who has supported me through all my meanderings, doubts and triumphs, and my two bright and wonderful kids, Jeff and Cindy, who unfortunately have a geek for a mother. As an outgrowth of my need for expression, I have embraced the computer and more recently digital tablets as another artistic tool. For this passion, I often suffer persecution and ridicule. My kids make fun of my geekdom. My husband, the accountant, while in awe of the progress I have made in reinventing myself and constantly updating my skills, is very grateful he only deals with debits and credits, rather than pixels and vectors.
I am primarily a visual person, and am always stewing a cauldron of images and ideas which have yet to take form. Sometimes these images, like demons, will bubble around in the stew for a while, only to tantalizingly submerge themselves and resurface again when something jogs the memory. Sometimes these ideas take on flesh and a consciousness of their own and resurface one day, demanding release from me.
