Artist Reviews:
Sometimes the sublime can be found even in the most mundane aspects of life. Take, for example, dead leaves on the ground in a park in suburban Machida, which British photographer and local resident Surendra has transformed into sublime images of visual poetry in his upcoming exhibition 'Natural Details'.

| Your Personal Biography |
I came to photography later on in life when in 1992, aged 49, I inherited some equipment from one of my uncles. Working in a boarding school at the time, the enthusiasm of a few senior pupils for the black and white darkroom fanned my passion and helped my confidence. I soon enrolled in courses and it was not so long before I began teaching the subject. Portfolio submissions preceded some magazine work.
Moving to Japan in 1999 with my new Japanese partner provided fresh, exotic subject matter. It also steeped my approach in the aesthetics of that country. Understatement with drama, refinement with spontaneity and precision with dissolution are the contradictory terms that spring to mind. They lend unique counterpoint to Japanese arts and crafts.
My stay in Japan provided the soil for my first exhibition of 40 black and white prints, 'Natural Details', at the Tokyo Museum for Photography in 2001. Returning to England soon afterwards, I created two further exhibitions in Exeter at the Exeter Craft Guild 'Towards Abstraction' and Star Child Gallery 'Natural Nudes'.
From 2003 to 2007 I concentrated on building series of images: 'Dartmoor Streams', 'Bark', and 'Eroded Rocks'. More recently, I have been producing a range of lith prints, latterly based on a shoot in Japan in 2007 of '500 buddhas'.
Moving next to the Dartmoor National Park at the end of 2008, I now have daily access and am planning a fresh look through the viewfinders at this wonderful area. |
