Artist Statement for Susanne Freitag

My current body of work explores the arranged constellations of form in connection with the unintended, seemingly chaotic line. One way I try to accomplish this is by placing three dimensional objects within my paintings. The chaotic irregular drawn or painted lines on paper are crossed by deliberately set 3 dimensional lines. This seems to allow the eye to wander deeper into the painting instead of just barely touching the surface. The hidden or not immediately obvious detail rises to the foreground and the viewer might discover the beauty of the irregular painted brushstrokes.
Another way I am exploring to accomplish the connection between the unintended and intended forms is sculpture. Being able to manipulate the flow of melted aluminum and still letting it take its own course fascinates me. Placing already made metal forms like nails into melted aluminum and then painting the hardened sculpture, letting it grow into its own individual existence allows me to realize the possibility of both endurance and ongoing change. The changing of an idea which was born through the process of creating gives me the opportunity to explore even further. I photograph the shapes and forms I have created and upload them into my computer. This tool allows me to consciously and deliberately change originally unintended forms into moving objects.
While working deliberately as well as by intuition I find myself fascinated by the process that unfolds itself visually as well as mentally. When starting the process of creating a new image I mentally sketch as I go. While I am working on the image I get to know myself as well as my surroundings more intense. I love the process of becoming. Not only witnessing this evolution on paper but also within myself. I get exited like a child when I realize a new understanding about myself and my environment.
