Artist Statement for Susan Ryles

We are the mirror as well as the face in it.
We are tasting the taste this minute of eternity.
We are pain and what cures pain.
We are the sweet cold water and the jar that pours. Rumi

As suggested in Rumi’s poem, my style touches on the dichotomy of life and spirit. I enjoy the aesthetic play of contrasting extremes or opposites. The contrast of concept or object and materials is a favorite theme in my three dimensional work. I am also interested in exploring the psychology of the self, my own aging process, gender roles and expectations, as well as the social psychology of politics and religion. I admire Linda Ridgway’s work. She casts bronze into very difficult and very feminine forms, such as lace table cloths and crocheted clothing. She beautifully executes themes addressing domesticity and gender roles by using materials that suggest the masculine in forms that decidedly suggest the feminine. Similarly, in my latest work, I construct feminine or domestic objects from unlikely and often distinctly masculine materials. While I always start with a general idea for my work, I often work intuitively and am led by materials, circumstances, current events, or my own state of mind. I try to remain open to whatever presents itself. I still feel a sense of wonder when a piece is completed. To witness a piece going from an abstract idea in my head to a three dimensional form continues to amaze me. My hope is that my work communicates a sense of the contradictions we all carry within. We are the questions and the answers.
