Artist Statement:
Original artwork should never have a mass-produced look, it should be obvious that each piece is handmolded - made one at a time. I suppose that's why I'm drawn to the natural, earthy look of terra cotta clay with accents of mottled and opalescent glazes. I consider the characteristic small imperfections to be a plus.
I prefer designing functional art like lamps, wedding cake toppers, bookends, soapdishes, wallpockets, etc. Clay is one of the few artistic mediums that can be decorative yet completely functional.
My work is influenced by the artistic movements of the early 20th century. The fluid feminine lines that are reminiscent of art nouveau. A hint of nature, sensuality and fantasy. In contrast, the highly stylized, archaic designs of the Art Deco period also appeal to me. I am especially taken with the art of sculptor Paul Manship.
