PRESS REVIEWS: "Capturing Fascinating Life Images" by Helen Peacocke (Oxford Gagette, UK United Kingdom, 2004)

The work of Japanese photographer Hidesawa Sudo, which is on show at The Theatre, Chipping Norton, illustrates how effective black-and-white photography can be when the man behind the lens is a gifted artist.

He is a fine art photographer and member of the Royal Photographic Society based in Osaka, Japan, and his work is now being displayed around the world. It is because his pictures capture moments in the life of ordinary people that they have become so popular.

He has an ability to notice aspects of life that others fail to see, which provides his pictures with a momentum all of their own and gives his work a documentary style. As he only uses natural light, his pictures have a soft finish and are therefore not intrusive. The people he captures on film seldom realize they are being photographed.

By being able to capture them as they go about their everyday lives, there is a considerable depth within his work, which compels visitors to his exhibitions to stay for longer than they intended.

He said that the images on show are a document of his travels to far away places, beginning from his doorstep in Osaka. He offers those who have not traveled a chance to see the world through his eyes and share his remarkable pictorial journey.
