Artist Statement for Suzanne Mcclelland

I may start with an idea, or maybe a stroke or line. I'm moved to create mostly when it's late at night and quiet. I focus on the colors to use and which of the different papers to create a feeling. No right or wrong. I just follow my mood at the time.
I like to make something out of nothing. Sometimes magazine or ad shapes and colors give me a starting point. The pastels themselves give me some new ideas. The way they feel in my hands as the pigment directly flows. No predefined order. Lines and shapes both guide and direct me. I love how the vibrant colors and textures make me feel as I am working, all the time seeking a balance between what I feel and what the piece is telling me. This is the freshness and energy in my painting.
I also love to work with Acrylics. Paint gives me freedom to explore smooth and texture surfaces. This medium is more more forgiving which I really like to play with.
I like to think of the work as possible. Images of reality expanded. The journey of the piece has created a place or an idea you may want to explore. Enjoy the ride. I do.
