Artist Statement for Suzanne Osullivan

My work incorporates the use of various media including glass, wire and bronze. The work is diverse enough to create interest, yet is unified by weaving techniques and its concepts. Although my work is sculptural the majority of my glasswork is wall mounted thus utilising gallery wall space. I have also begun exploring the properties of light, through the means of light boxes, and how it interacts with my glass pieces intensifying their colour and texture. Most of my inspiration comes from the natural world in the form of found objects such as shells, stones, twigs etc and the effects of the natural elements on both organic and man-made matter. The textures and aesthetics caused by age and weathering are of constant fascination to me.This combined with the time honoured tradition of weaving and basketry is pivotal to my work. Over the past few years I have begun to encase these weavings in fused glass. Some of which have become extremely fragile in appearance, conveying a sense of fragmented cloth preserved in time. Others are influenced by fossilised remains, which provide us with evidence of ancient forms etched in stone or caught in amber. My glasswork seeks to evoke this timelessness, almost ethereal effect. Some of my bronze work also reflects this interest of the effects of time; decayed objects such as those you may find washed up on the beach eroded by the natural elements and ravages of time. The oxides I use on my bronze work are purposely chosen to convey this weathered and battered effect. I find it interesting that man-made metal objects which are specifically built for endurance can be eroded by time and can become almost organic in appearance.
