Artist Statement:
Tracey Tarling was born in Vancouver, B.C. She has studied painting and sculpture at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and Zen brush painting with Ari Tomita at the Vancouver Academy of Art.
For the past several years, Tarling has been working on a series of paintings and monotypes that reflect her interest in natural sciences, transformation, passages and regrowth.
Using oil, ink, solvent transfers and drawing on plaster and wood, her surfaces suggest ethereal landscapes of trees, leaves and rock. Life cycles and watery curves are pushed forward and back in time. Fragile botanical fragments float and decay in a process of rejuvenation. Black marks are heavily weighted and charcoal and graphite are sanded and scratched with reference to process, struggle, and hope.
