Artist Statement:
S.Schraft has been creating
art for the past 20 years and
until recently was involved in
Art Education since 1973. She
has participated in many art
shows in the NY Capital
District and throughout the
country including
Manhattan,Chicago and Los
Angeles.
Establishing a connection
between the natural and the
geometric has been an emerging
theme in most of Schraft's
work. The juxtaposition of
the soft and hard edge working
with or against each other
provides a visual tension of
the elements in each work of
art.
Schraft works in many layers
of materials. She creates
artworks of mixed media
building up from the surface
with found
imagery,text,natural objects
and layers of paint and
drawings. Each piece has a
distinct composition that
includes geometric and organic
shape along with line and
multiple layers of color. The
result is a surreal quality
that suggests a variety of
interpretations from the
viewer....

NYC- Viridian Artists in Chelsea is pleased to present for its last show of its 2004-05 season, a select group of Affiliate Artists. The exhibit continues from July 18th through August 5th with a reception to meet the artists, on Wednesday July 20th, 5-7pm. Viridian Artists’ Affiliate program is part of this gallery’s effort to show as many outstanding under-shown artists as possible. With increased interest in art as well as the growing realization of the importance of culture in today’s world, and the rash of tourists from abroad have made summer gallery shows more important than ever. This show is evidence of that fact.
Susan Schraft shows complex mixed media works mixing the natural and organic with the mechanical coolness of structure. She sees these two forces opposing each other in the world, and through her art, she merges them to portray the possibility of a communal existence in the world.
