Artist Statement for Fiona Stanbury

I have spent my entire life moving, from country to country, (Africa, Cyprus, Malta), and within the UK.

My work is primarily concerned with colours and how they relate across the oicture surface, how they create mood and an imaginary world. My themes always have their roots in something I've seen, or dreamed about, and anything that strikes an emotinal chord. Visual experiences often suggest potential 'colour notes' in my mind, which I can follow in any direction the emerging painting might require. My work falls into 3 main categories:

1. LANDSCAPES.
I paint watercolours in situ to explore the landscape's elements, searching for the essential components that, for me, recreate a sense of place and underlying forces. Sometimes I work directly from the memory of a journey, or a quick drawing, or purely from random marks and colours.

2. WOMEN IN THE TURKISH BATHS.
When I lived in Nicosia I went regularly to the old Turkish Baths and drew and painted women in the changing room and in the heated chambers, using snippets of conversation to inform the gestures and poses of the figures in my paintings. The Baths convey a constant state of flux, from the daily relationships of the women, and the way light shimmers on the bodies, to the flickering bands of steam, and my own emotional state as I face the women. My use of shapes expresses these interests, while the bands of coloured steam embody the flow of life. The arches can be seen as doorways into other physical or mental places.

3. CITYSCAPES.
Initially when I moved to Nicosia, I was enthralled with the city, and painted from many different rooftops. Over 14 years, the paintings changed direction and evolved into colour constructions, allowing me to explore patterns and shapes. Though the work still shifts in emphasis, and I go back to paint the city in situ, my main concerns are still colour and the spirit of the place.
