Your Personal Biography The saying goes 'every cloud has a silver lining' and in my case this was true. Redundancy from my job as an electro-mechanical maintenance engineer was a bleak and worrying time but it opened a door for me. It gave me the opportunity to step back and take a long hard look at myself. I was able to look at parts of my life that I had previously ignored or taken for granted. After taking a retrospective look at my early years of education and the subjects I had enjoyed, I decided to make a big change in my life and venture into the world of Art and Design.

Until 1991 I had always worked as an engineer in various fields of engineering. I began my working life as a mechanical engineering apprentice with Bath engineers Stothert and Pitt Ltd and later went on to work for companies such as: -
Roche Mechanical Handling
A.C.E. Engineering
C&F Manufacturing
Bristol Powerwash
Design had always played a big part in my work, it helped me overcome technical problems that occurred with the machine tools and plant equipment I was responsible for.
After my redundancy and as a result of my self-analysis, I decided I wanted to proceed with design but not in a technical sense. Certainly not in a situation where every dimension had to be within the rigid tolerances of the engineering drawings.
I wanted to be free to express myself in a world where an error was seen as a feature, not as a technical blunder costing a lot of time and money.
My first step was to take an informal evening class in Stained Glass Design where I was able to bring together basic engineering skills combined with simple design ideas. I enjoyed this very much and it was not long before I decided I wanted to take serious steps towards a nationally accepted qualification in Art and Design. So, in 1995 I enrolled in a two-year part time A level Art course and started the ball rolling. After the first year I found it was working well for me so I looked into other qualifications that would take me forward. It was suggested I took an Access Course that would lead on to a degree course. This I did and along with the second year A level, attained the required qualifications to take up a degree course. As a result in October 1997 I began a three-year course at Bath Spa University. I graduated in June 2000 with an Honours Degree in Creative Arts.
In the following year of 2001, after applying and being accepted, I was awarded a place on a Post Graduate Fellowship Course. As a Fellowship Student I was allowed the use of the University studios and facilities for my own research and development. This was possibly the most important period for my evolution; it gave me the freedom to express my ideas without the regular monitoring, scrutiny and assessments that were part of my degree course.
Since then I have continued with my work and have exhibited in different venues on a regular basis. I sell my work through my exhibitions and private commissions.
