Artist Statement for Thedarkworld Project
|
|
|
Interestingly, I have had one particular reading of
the work that conveyed that
the Darkworld Project is not challenging the media
spectacle per se but it is a direct and
systematic symptom of it. It is the afterglow of the
world we have created. This is my
'Darkworld' a world that has formed as a result of a
surveillance society where identity
is constructed by the mass media, deranged by a
technological frenzy of indifference.
With this in mind these human figures that haunt the
vestiges of my disparate urban
landscapes wander aimlessly in a world of no meaning;
in and out of the structures
that we have built, that WE are responsible for.
?
My aim is to turn around a rather stale and looped art
scene ever caught in the web of
appropriation and repetition. This "scene" is totally
market driven with the pondering
blue chip art galleries pushing the latest in hype,
investing heavily in new upcoming young
artists. I am sorry but this is not good enough. The
art that they so frequently praise will
not stand up in two or three hundred years time.
Having said that it is only for the select
few but not by any means the best. If we dont
encounter all? art of excellence then we
will be unable to have claimed we have experienced the
best art on the planet at this
time period. This is presently measured through the
mainstream media (high profile art
magazines, TV, Turner prize etc). Take for example an
artist I have admired for a long
time Juno Doran. Here is someone who gallery has just
closed! This artist is as good if
not better than anything in New York or else where.
Another artist is Eric Doeringer
who bootlegs of "famous" art is reproduced on stalls
outside these high profile galleries
for $20 saying that high art is unreachable in price
for the ordinary person. There is also
Kevin Dresser who wanders New York insearch of
abadoned cars and uses them as his
canvas.
?
?
I have an idea of reproducing physicality virtually
and that is why I am working on "de-void"-
a virtual reality of the physical gallery space. There
I can put together the work as an
installation. I would like to push painting further.
My previous work concentrated on "that very moment in
time"- an? event that is about to
occur or has just happened in time- a linear
existence. It is forever frozen in that moment.
Most painting is centered on this, well most "realist"
painting that is.
I saw a BBC ad that showed a number of views or angles
of the one situation. I also saw a
talk by Bill Viola in his "Passion show" at the
National. One of his pieces depicted the same
scene but at totally two different angles.
thats why I am thinking about showing the work
virtually for now.

I have so many ideas that I have enough work to do for
atleast the next 5 years!
