Artist Statement:
On the brink of the horizon;
Characteristic for the work of
Theo Koster is the surface
division; vast skies over land
or water, with a low horizon,
and a bright, contemporary use
of colour. His sensibility for
the right choice of colour and
his dynamic use of paint
create a specific atmosphere
in each individual painting.
In addition, he makes use of
graphic- and collage
techniques. At the same time,
quietness is present in his
playful and narrative
paintings, establishing an
almost effortless and
self-evident compositional
balance.
Theo Koster (the Netherlands,
1952), studied at the Gerrit
Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam,
and at the Academy for the
Visual Arts in Arnhem. Even
then, his paintings possessed
the features of a landscape,
albeit that they were more
subdued than his more recent
work. He also developed a
language of imagery, which he
uses and extends to this very
day.
In his canvases, he
incorporates into his work a
theme which occupies
collectively; giving meaning
to human existence. In the
course of this process, he
makes the connection with his
own life, his personal
commitment, making us of
symbolic language of imagery.
