Artist Statement:
I have always had a special
fascination and love for
animals. After exploring all
manner of subjects & styles,
in the end, turning to the
realistic portrayal of our
faithful domestic animal
companions was a natural
choice. The detail and
compassion in the works of
artists such as Carl Brenders,
Steven Townsend and Robert
Bateman have been, and remain,
a constant source of
inspiration for me. I delight
in trying to create the
texture of soft fur on a flat
canvas, and capture spirit
through the eyes – the base
upon which the rest of each
portrait grows. Although I
strive for lifelike realism
which stands up to close
scrutiny, I also try to
preserve a certain quality of
painterly effect from the
nature of the oil pastels
themselves.
Born in the United Kingdom, I
moved to Canada as a child and
now reside on the West Coast
in Victoria, BC. Largely
self-taught, I have been
drawing and painting for as
long as I can remember, and
sold my first commissioned
portrait at the age of
sixteen. Initially fascinated
with graphite, and the
simplicity of black & white
studies, it was during my
school years that I was first
