Artist Statement for Julian Thompson

I have been painting now for 5 year, not including 4 years of school and a childhood full of art in all shapes and forms. I'm still young, but I have a strong determination to do what I want in life, an at the moment that is painting and sculpting. I love colors and enjoy the simple act of working.

I paint because I love to paint. I am not trying to change the world, nor am I trying to get people to feel a certain way. What I would like more than anything for people to do upon viewing my work, is smile. Try to get people to forget anything serious or disturbing.

The only statement I have is that painting, sculpture, music and any other art form, is a personal thing. Each person will view the same work in a completely different manner, and will each come to thier own conclusions on what it is, what it represents, and what it means. Each view is equal to any other view, for each view is true to the viewer. That is why everything I make is untitled. I do not wish to influence the viewer, although I do state when it is a self-portrait or a portrait of a friend.

Thank you.

Julian Thompson
