Artist Statement for Thore Kienscherf

|
I am a Korean-German artist, born in 1974 in Hamburg, Germany. In 2001 I started painting, learning in an autodidactic manner working with different styles and techniques. My way of painting has changed from a smooth style with emphasis on details towards a paste-like and freer way.
Consequently the paint is applied with a spattle, so I avoid getting lost in details and can give more alternatives of interpretation to the eyes of the viewers.
My model-pictures show my view on the sensuality of advertising pictures and fashion-photography. In my artwork the female models are dissociated from the advertised products and are placed into a new context. There is no intention to criticise the propagated modern beauty ideal in my artwork. What I do is trying to understand and express what this ideal is constituted of, this ideal which is about outward qualities but obviously seems to mean more than that.
Living in Berlin it is temptative for me to picture adequate scenes of this city in my paintings. I combine the motives models and city by displaying the models on giant posters on the buildings.
I have presented my works in various exhibitions in Germany and other European countries.
