Artist Statement for Timon Maxey

My goal in painting is to create images that are humourous and/or interesting or else beautiful and a pleasure to behold. I like to tell stories with my cartoon images. You can see more art on my website www.maxey.co.nz

I think that there is high value in art that clearly communicates something useful to the viewer and that, if it is necessary to read an explanation of an artwork in order to understand it, then it has largely failed.

I have always been very interested and involved in art. My parents are both artistic and musical, and this inspired me to paint and draw from a very early age. Even while at university studying geography, I spent much of my spare time drawing, and deriving supplementary income from artistic endeavours. I have a very wide range of experiences and knowledge to draw from, and want to incorporate these into my art to produce work that interests and excites both the audience and myself.

My goals are to secure exhibitions in public Galleries, and to exhibit outside New Zealand. Late in 2008, I travel to the Grand Canyon to kayak the Colorado River and to take photographs for my artwork, as well as to visit both New York and Dubai to find dealer galleries to represent and exhibit my work. I intend to develop my cubist style further, to explore other areas in art and generally to raise the profile of my work.
