These pieces were done using multiple printings of standard, scanned black and white photographs and digital color photographs on Arches 90 lb. watercolor paper. Further media used includes watercolor, chalk pastel, charcoal, colored pencil, collaged paper, and water-based polymer medium.
They began as an extension of some compelling photographs from itinerant photographer’s work in Southeastern Alabama from the 1930’s. I felt drawn to the stark expression that was conveyed by many of the subjects, unencumbered by context or preparation. These were very different from the old photographs I had of my (Northern) family, which were standard, posed studio records. I then began to use the lack of context as the point of departure, placing them in a new ekistic.
I have been using my own photographs now, concentrating mostly on decayed architectural forms and materials, which have not seemed inherently worthy of representation. Taken in a new context, they become new themselves, both through being taken as parts, which decreases their subjective nature; and manipulation with other media to enhance the beauty of the forms.
I have also made some boxes from antique and found objects which grew out of these 2-dimensional pieces, as a kind of archaic modernism. More of my work can be seen by e-mailing me at BackwaterBooks1@comcast.net.
