Artist Statement:
Titus Hora studied Printmaking at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, and computer animation at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. Inspired by the works of Karl Sims and Matthew Lewis, Hora started to learn computer programming in 2001.
At a time when the fascination with intelligent computer programs and spiritual machines is permeating popular culture, (“The Matrix”, “Terminator”, “The Age of Spiritual Machines”), Hora writes his own software to harness the powerful creative potential of the computer - the newest medium for artistic expression.
His work is an exploration of complexity, order and chaos, simultaneity and dislocation, resulting in unexpected, visually surprising, deeply layered, rich and sensuous images.
Using aleatory search techniques to explore the field of possible images, Hora’s software generates shapes, textures and compositions that undergo a process of aesthetic selection before being added, subtracted, multiplied and overlaid to create background, foreground and “noise” elements. Each final image is the result of a unique combination and balanced merging of these three components.
Due to their procedural origin the compositions are free from dimensional constraints: the larger the renderings, the more depth and detail is revealed, without artifacts (pixelation).
