Artist Statement:
TOMMY FREEMAN OBJECTS
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
I constantly ask myself if
there is any milage left in
the idea of art as an
oppositional practice, that
being the production of work
critical of prevailing culture
and normative practice from
outside. The answer is in my
own question. My predecessors
-think Bickerton, Fleury,
Steinbach, Holzer, etc.-
investigated this mode of
studio practice to fairly far
ends, however they, being
mainly from a generation
predating the now extreme
commodification of culture
generally commented from a
degree of distance. Rather
than taking a position
outside, I have come to
understand issues endemic to
commodity and/or high
capitalist culture (or
modernist) from within given
that my formative years fell
in the heart of the 1980’s,
and my early adulthood in the
1990’s: a time one could
argue, that the fore mentioned
commodification of
culture/identity found itself
nearly completed as
globalization’s trajectory
began to find its mark. This
ia a situation that is largely
the result of a general
acquiescence by consumers
through media conditioning.
This is not a situation
limited to typical pedestrian
products but one that is also
applicable to consumptive
practices in art and art
