Artist Statement for Tiago Mateus

Daedalus encounters the New World.
Ever since the heydays of kindergardenhood in Washington DC, I have taken different ideas to another level of meaning and implementation and, fabricated new things for my enlightenment and that of others. I vividly recall molding battletanks from candy and creating bamboo ladders for the besiegers of my sand fortress on the beach. Enthralled by the mystery of Stonehenge, I created a sun dial for a villa using natural resources that lured in tourists from the highway. I also remember creating a board game based on my favorite videogame for my classmates.
Carrying this childhood lust for exploration and experimentation into my teenage years in Portugal, I focused on developing and perfecting my own artistic sensibilities with use of different media. At the age of 18 I had a sell-out one-man exhibition in Portugal and received nationwide newspaper coverage. I won an International Baccalaureate Art competition based on the theme “Reflections on Chinese Art” and showcased my art work in the Tate Gallery, which was later auctioned-off for charity. I graduated with honors and founded ARTrageous!, aiming for more solidarity amongst artists and art buyers worldwide and recognition of aspiring artists. As an undergrad in the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, I worked on numerous commissioned projects ranging from concept generation to promotional material for corporations and non-profit institutions. I expanded my techniques by learning graphic software, which added a new texture and vibrance to my art work.
Today, I approach life and art with the same enthusiasm and playful curiosity. But I am more mindful of the fleeting interests and demanding tastes of the public. My sources of inspiration are ideas that are ground-breaking, forward-looking, extraordinary, captivating and charismatic. Historical references include the dramatic imagery and symbolism of the Renaissance, Picasso’s distortion of reality, Toulouse-Lautrec’s sophistication, Matisse’s expressiveness of color and figure, Dali’s lucid imagination and audacity, as well as Diego Rivera’s symbolism and his compassion for the working class. Modern ideas which inspire me include Philippe Starck’s unremorseful spoon-bar stool, the clubbing mania in Ibiza, Minority Report’s rollercoaster highway and laser beamed advertising, Marilyn Mansion’s gory yet tantalizing imagery, Apple’s sleek yet pragmatic i-Pod and, much more.
To survive, one has to be vigilant and compassionate. Both coventional and new desires will need to be fulfilled with functionality and aesthetics. That is why I strongly believe that today is the beginning of the era of the “L'HOMME PROVOCATEUR”.
