Artist Statement for Todd Mosley

I use oil paint on wood panels to create works of art that comment on the amount of television advertising that I intake on a daily basis. The transparent and translucent qualities of oil paint allow me to layer several advertisements onto one picture plane. My paintings take on three formats; the three formats are derived from my two television sets. The three formats are referred to as the DVR Paintings, the Infomercial Paintings and the Versus Paintings.
For the DVR Paintings, I use a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) to capture every television program that I regularly watch. I then capture one image from each commercial and layer them together to form a completed painting. I use translucent and opaque layers of paint to conceal and reveal interesting juxtapositions. The end result is a series of paintings that represent the fusion of the advertisements within the specific television programs that I watch. Each painting becomes a chronologically ordered and obtrusive amalgamation of commercial advertising.
The Infomercial Paintings are predominantly textual. I chose several time periods when I would normally be asleep with the television on. For a designated amount of time, I flip through the infomercials and write down the first audible sentence of each. From a distance these paintings take on the appearance of a television that has been tuned to static. Upon closer inspection they are revealed to consist of several layers of text representing the familiar static noise of infomercial catch phrases and sales pitches.
The Versus Paintings deal more with the concept of competition within advertising. Each Versus Painting is comprised of two competing consumer products. Each panel is dedicated to one specific product and is then paired with a panel that displays a competing item. Both panels are shown as a diptych and together make one solid piece of artwork. This series steps beyond specific television commercials and attempts to spark a conversation regarding competition in consumerism.
My paintings present the vast amount of commercial advertising that I as a television viewer intake on a regular basis. I use the traditional medium of oil paint to quiet the obtrusiveness of today’s consumer culture. The paintings are intended to be both unpleasantly informational and blatantly overwhelming.
