Artist Statement:
TOURI Maruyama
I was born in Tokyo.
In my junior high school days,
I knew Toyozo Arakawa
who rearized the reproduction of ceramic art "Shino"
in the Momoyama age through his whole life.
When I knew way of his life, I'm touched
and I decided to become a potter.
Through the experience
facing many interesting paintings and pottery
in my high school days,
I decided to devote myself to the world of beauty.
However, my father did't allow me to get into the Art University.
In the university days,
I met the pottery of Ri-cho
in the book of Masaaki Tachihara.
graduated fromTokyo Keisen girl's high-school,
Tokyo Shirayuri women's College
Department of Literature of French,
Tokyo Tamagawa University Department of Education.
in 1987, I started my career in the field of the pottery industry
and begun to make ceramic art by my self.
I set up the kiln (electric kiln)
that was my first step to devote myself to pottery world.
in 1995, I started my life as full time professional ceramic artist.
I 've been using glaze(I always prepare personally)
which was prepared ash of nature since then.
