MY PURPOSE -- In recent years, my chosen medium has been the computer -- and most often, in concert with photography. I've chosen to work digitally because of the incredible control it bestows upon me. And limitless opportunities. This can be a double-edged sword because with the infinite options it is very easy to become seduced by the technology, employing it for its own sake. As with any artistic medium, it is the obligation of the artist to fully grasp its capabilities, then employ the medium to execute one's vision. The trick is not to allow the medium to be the message.

My subject matter is most often the natural world around us. I have a deep regard for its diversity. Its beauty. Its unpredictability. Its cyclicality. Its geometry. Its resilience. And most of all, its spirituality. Illustrating these qualities is what I strive for in my pictures.

It feels presumptuous to say, but through my digital medium, I am manipulating nature. Not improving upon it. Maybe I enhance it a bit -- creating fog where none had been -- digitally transplanting ladyslippers to a new location -- producing a full moon where there had been only darkness. Like the conscientious gardener, I try to work in tandem with our natural world -- producing an outcome that is compelling, gratifying, inspirational.

MY PROCESS -- I maintain an archive of thousands of photographs I've taken through the years. Indeed, hundreds of just clouds alone. After I germinate an idea, I'll composite the scanned photos. Sometimes I'll combine them with objects scanned directly on the scanner bed and drawings I rendered traditionally. My current computer is an Apple G4. I use Adobe Photoshop as my primary software tool. My concerns are identical to that of any other artist employing a more traditional medium. Subject, composition, light, atmosphere, color, spatial quality, contrast, balance, rhythm.

I hope you enjoy viewing my art as much as I enjoy creating it. Thank you for looking.
