Artist Statement:
My name is Benjamin Edwards
and I create mobiles. My
primary materials are
aluminum, copper, and stained
glass. I enjoy the light,
uplifting feeling of artistic
mobiles, especially those by
Alexander Calder, the creator
of the original mobiles, whose
pieces I had first seen in New
York (one of which is pictured
above). I think most Calder
mobiles, especially his later
works, are absolutely
breathtaking.

A particular aspect of his
works struck me, however. The
joints in his mobiles, being
made out of wire, prevented
each element from rotating
independently. I began to
wonder how his mobiles would
look if each element could
rotate independently. Soon
after my return to California,
I went to work designing a
magnetic "frictionless" joint
for my own mobiles.

After some research, I
discovered that for my mobiles
to function properly, I would
need to find a magnetic
material with very high gauss
(magnetic strength) relative
to its weight. In fact, I
needed the material with the
highest natural gauss known to
man; neodymium magnets. Much
to my delight, I discovered
that one of the very few
places in the US that carries
neodymium magnets in the
strength and dimensions that I
needed was less ...
