Artist Statement:
Malcolm Tuffnell
Is a tremendous talent in contemporary figurative painting. His works exist between a realistic drawn representation of the female figure and an abstract use of impasto and color. He has been exploring the possibilities of oil paint and pastel for over 30 years, with particular attention paid to how color layers interact with eachother; specifically how thin overglazes of a strong color, for example phthalo blue or rose red, can change the character of the paint or pastel underneath them in unexpected ways, producing many new colors while neutralizing others into grays. He has chosen the female form as the subject of his paintings for its beauty, sensuality and historical precedent. He uses the fluidity of oil to express the sensuality of nude skin. Many of his works derive inspiration from the frequent opera and ballet performances he attends, such as Madame Butterfly and The Nutcracker ballet. However, he does not intend to illustrate a story explicitly but instead to suggest a more vague emotional narrative.

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
My mother. She was always sensitive to beauty when I was a child. She is 83 now and still writes beautiful short poetry( check it out at alittlepoetry.com). She sends cards with funky little drawings on them to her friends. She bought many of my paintings when I was broke, and has generally critiqued and been a champion of my art about my art.
From my Dad I received an appreciation of classical music, my sense of humor, (and a love of wine, sometimes a little too much love). |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I "officially" became an artist around 1978, when I came back from Europe and started oil painting. I was on academic probation at college (University of California, Santa Barbara, also known as the University of Beautiful Tanned Coeds) as a zoology major, listening to the symphonies of Gustav Mahler and generally feeling like running down our road and heading off the cliff in a vertical manner. A professor asked me why I was a science major if I only could complete half the genetics questions on the exam. My Dad, a working-man(newspaperman, gardener, and custodian) said, "Son, not everybody goes to college! Look at me, I didn't evem finish high school!" Now I had always been one of those pale decidedly nonathletic sensitive types, slightly geeky, prone to wearing windbreakers and plaid pants (this was the 70s, you know). So I became an artist due my lack of athletic/math/science skills (unfortunately, all the things that define the American Male) and the fact that I had sketched with crayons and oil pastels most of my young life up to that point. And don't even try to take away my crayons now... |

| Your Personal Biography |
Well, like I said before above, I went to Europe in 1978, and toured France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Spain, seeing cathedrals and museums and staying in youth hostels. This trip pretty much set me on the path of an artist. |
