Artist Statement for Patricia Coleman

My name is Patricia C. Coleman. I have lived in the Indiana woodlands more than twenty years. Born in Washington, D.C., I am a painter, storyteller, occasional figure maker, educator, writer (member of the 5 Women Poets, audio describer for the visually impaired, beginning quilt maker and now, web site builder. I have been a featured poet, storyteller, workshop coordinator and presenter in schools and libraries; on radio programs and at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, the John Waldron Arts Center, and the Stone Song and Lotus World Music Festivals and the Iowa State Women's Center. I enjoy organizing an annual multi-media art exhibition with poetry, storytelling dance and music to celebrate National Poetry Month.

Many of my new works are figurative, some of them emerging directly from the canvas, while others are made with healing intent. I continue to work with the theme of the Peace Pie Makers and will presently upload images from a recent debut of figures.

My work is a journey to the heart. It is about exploring the intangible within all being. The solid place strong on love. I seek it in the examining of ordinary sights, dreams and meditations to form seeds developed through intuition. Some images/ideas take years to come to life. My goal is to breath out peaceful images that offer a sustaining love, a heart song, a joy song to those who experience my work.

I have been influenced by the ceremonial arts of Native America, Africa, Australia, Early European and Eastern cultures and their attention to relationships among all things.

My work is in public and private collections in the U.S., Germany, England and Finland.

If you would like a complete biography, submit an E-mail request. I am available upon request for participation in unique art adventures, literary and storytelling presentations. I am also available on a limited basis for workshops. Thank you.
