Artist Statement for Cheryl Alagich

Modern interpretations of the Classical
by artist Cheryl Alagich

Series titled-Flight of the Soul
(showing 4 of 37 pieces for sale)

The Process

In this series, the images are based on masterpieces from ancient, Renaissance and Baroque art. I captured these images while traveling throughout Italy. They have been inspired by the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and ancient Greek and Roman art. These images are reinterpreted through the use of mixed media. This modern process links the past with the present. Each piece has its own visual and emotional symbolism; therefore, my selection of different media my vary.

In this series, I have combined photographs, drawings, sculpture, photographic toners, watercolors, oil paints, pastels, charcoal, photographic pencils, plaster and applied objects. In some pieces, mirrors are used in the background-allowing the viewer to participate and become part of the art. All manipulation is done in the studio. There is no computer or digital manipulation. Whenever possible, I try to retain the old master and aged appearance by using antique deteriorated frames. I begin with the frame and build the pieces inside them. In most cases painting or adding objects or allowing the piece to flow onto the frame, therefore the frames are part of the artwork.

Artist’s Statement

The use of Mixed Media seems to be a form of expression that is most natural to me and comes from my love of all media. I have always been fascinated by history and love to travel to photograph my own images. I feel this allows a much more personal interpretation. The layering or juxtaposition of symbolic images sets off an endless chain of associations. both visual and emotional (corresponding to the power and magic of the myths, symbols, and metaphors of the past). These abstract interpretations create surreal overtones by their symbolic arrangement or their suggestive placement in relationship to each other. The illusion of space and contradictory perspective create ambiguous and mysterious sensations which unearth possibilities for dealing with the unconscious experiences. Since we are all products of our own history, each viewer will have his own interpretation.

In constructing my art, I allow my intuition to do the grasping. The images inside the window’s are the over-flowing of unconscious into reality. They are full of subtle messages and are meant to draw the viewer in for a private conversation. My reward as an artist is to unearth emotions in the viewer causing them to participate in the aesthetic experience.

Note: Please be aware that these pieces are dimensional with space and depth-which is difficult to translate when viewed on the flat surface of a photograph or slide.

Also- The pieces are in no way computer or digitally manipulated.
All photos are taken by me on location with my 35 mm camera and enlarged by me in my darkroom. Manipulation is all done by me in my studio. I do every step of the process personally from start to finish. Although, I do elect to order the glass cut by the glass company. That is the only part of the process that I do not do.

I do computer manipulation and have nothing against computer manipulation--but keep my studio and computer work separate to avoid confusion. But I feel it is important to note the works that are in this series titled, Flight of the Soul -37 pieces available for sale are all studio works with no computer manipulation.

Thank You for taking the time to read my statement,
Cheryl Alagich
